Final Project

Here is my group's final project. I hope you all enjoy it. I have had a wonderful time on this trip and could not have asked for a better group to spend these five weeks with.

Coming of Age as a Global Citizen

Museum of London

Karim, from Buddha of Suburbia, has to grapple with two very different sides of himself to understand himself. In the past, different races have had to grapple with their sides to find ways to work and live with each other harmoniously.

 V&A Museum

This skull is one of many that have been used in the famous play Hamlet. Like many people, Karim uses acting to try to find himself.

 V&A Museum

Karim takes on a role that is meant to express some of his father's culture but ends up being an embarrassment. The creator for the Lion King costumes, however, was respectful of the African culture and worked to express the character's emotions.

When I was younger, I expressed myself through dance.

Wesley Chapel

Now, I often find myself in my religion. On this trip I had the chance to visit Wesley's chapel, the founding chapel of Methodism.

Whatever your method for finding your global citizenry, whether it be through dance or religion or acting, the process is an ongoing one just like the London Eye goes in an ongoing circle.

Coming of Age as a Writer

The British Library
Briony, the main character of Atonement, tries to atone for her crimes through writing. However, it is not until she is an elderly women that she is able to achieve writing her redeeming novel. Many people have this problem as a young writer, as their imagination is not mature enough to handle large imaginary worlds and problems.

The Imperial War Museum
Briony has the advantage of working with a world that existed, Britain and the British during WWII.

The Imperial War Museum
As a woman during WWII, Briony would have seen many new job opportunities open for her.

The Florence Nightingale Museum
While remaining an author on the side, Briony decides to become a nurse.

The Florence Nightingale Museum
She attends the Florence Nightingale school of Nursing. There she follows the strict rules that Miss Nightingale set for her nurses and her hospital.

The Florence Nightingale Museum
Like Miss Nightingale, who wrote prolifically, Briony continued to write throughout her life- even after she was no longer a nurse. From seeing her maturing mind and continuos writing we can get a glimpse inside the mind of someone coming of age as a writer- especially during one coming of age during war time.

Coming of Age as Believer/ Skeptic

Sometimes Coming of Age as a Believer or Skeptic can be lonely.

The first thing one thinks of when someone says “believer” or “skeptic” is faith in God or a higher power. However, faith is not the only thing that someone can believe in or not.

Small experiences can change our status as a believer or skeptic, like a few drops of water can baptize someone.

As we learned in Bridesdhead revisted, fountains also often times symbolize power and wealth. One thing that people coming of Age have to grapel with is believing in these things.

Fountains are not the only things that symbolize power and wealth. Country houses symbolize power and aristocracy. In Brideshead Revisted, the country house comes to symbolize wealth, influence, aristocracy, faith and eventually the country of England itself.

Coming of Age as a Traveler

Traveling with Lucy, from Room With a View, would have been much slower than the buses and trains we are able to use today.

When a traveler got to their destination they usually had guidebooks which would tell them what sights to look for.

Lucy uses a book called Baedeker. Oftentimes guidebooks direct their readers towards religious building and artifacts.

However, the ultimate achievement in traveling was to see a new view and gain a new perspective.

Coming of Age as a Worker

Like the orphans who ended up at the foundling house, often times starting the journey to becoming a worker was difficult.

When one started working, one had to depend on their knowledge and wit.

As a governess, Jane Eyre would have had better conditions than a lot of workers; with a steady bed and kitchen.

Like bees, workers were busy and restrained to one job with little room for status change.

Like Ophelia, who rebels through suicide, women in the work force had small cages and tight rules that were not supposed to be rebelled against.

When women did rebel, their life and the life of their dependent's was shaken and suffered.

Leslie as a Horned Frog

I have wanted to be a Horned Frog since I was in 5th grade.

When I got in, I felt like this.

All of my family are big Horned Frog Fans, even my dogs!

I am a member of Sigma Kappa at TCU and an education major.

I quickly became a huge football fan, even staying up all night for Game Day...

...and driving through my first blizzard to get to LA....

...and waking up at 3:30 in the morning for the Rose Bowl Parade. It was so cold!
