Coming of Age as a Worker

Like the orphans who ended up at the foundling house, often times starting the journey to becoming a worker was difficult.

When one started working, one had to depend on their knowledge and wit.

As a governess, Jane Eyre would have had better conditions than a lot of workers; with a steady bed and kitchen.

Like bees, workers were busy and restrained to one job with little room for status change.

Like Ophelia, who rebels through suicide, women in the work force had small cages and tight rules that were not supposed to be rebelled against.

When women did rebel, their life and the life of their dependent's was shaken and suffered.

  1. I really like the symbolism of the bee in connection with a worker from Jane's era. It is so crazy to think that a women rebelling would come at such a cost, that painting shows the loss well.

  2. I too loved the images, esp the bee and the books. Your framing is quite artful too. Well done!

  3. I like how you incorporated the paintings with the real-life elements. I also liked the pictures of the bee and the books. The bee is such a unique and good comparison with workers. The books are also a nice shot because they look like they could have come from Jane's time, and workers - especially governesses - had to read books and develop their intellect.

  4. I like the way you set up your shots, especially the angle of the last one. The bee is cute!

  5. I think I attempted to take a picture of that exact bee. Great minds do indeed think alike.
